Lake Oconee is a reservoir in central Georgia on the Oconee River in Eatonton. It is operated by Georgia Power.Lake Oconee is located off I-20 about 1 hr east of Atlanta It was created in 1979 when Georgia Power completed the construction of the Wallace Dam on the Oconee River. Lake Oconee is also the second largest lake in the state of Georgia. Lake Oconee runs through Georgia's Morgan, Greene, and Putnam counties and is separated from its sister lake, Sinclair, by Wallace Dam.
Lake Oconee offers a vast number of outdoor activities. Fishing is one of the most popular activities on the lake. Fisherman can catch bass, crappie, catfish, & bluegills. Water skiing, tubing and wakeboarding are also excellent on Lake Oconee since the lake is uncrowded during weekdays. Lake Oconee has a sand bar that attracts crowds of friendly boaters during the weekends. Another attraction that's fun for young and old is the jumping rock. Bird watching is a also a great activity around the lake. Hummingbirds, ospreys, eagles, woodpeckers, and other birds can be spotted frequently
